Over 80 victims of flooding in the Karung’a area of Mwingi Central, Kitui County, are seeking urgent help after their homes were swept away by the flooded River Katiliku on November 7, 2023.
The displaced individuals are reaching out to the government, well-wishers, and non-governmental organizations for assistance, particularly in providing food and other essential needs.
Many of the victims have disclosed that they are unable to afford monthly rent in the Karung’a market area, where they sought refuge and rented houses.
Dorcas Kivivya, one of the victims and a mother of eight, emphasized the dire situation, stating that they spent the year-end holidays without proper meals. She explained that most of them relied on farming, but their crops were destroyed by the flooded river, leaving them dependent on goodwill for food.
Kivivya, who rented five rooms to accommodate her family, expressed her inability to pay the house rent, lamenting the loss of everything and the financial challenges she now faces.
Jackson Misyili, another victim and a father of seven, shared that their livelihood was solely dependent on farming, and after the destruction of their crops, they now rely on the generosity of well-wishers.

Misyili highlighted the difficulty of returning to his ancestral land due to the altered course of River Katiliku, which now passes through his home. He fears that returning home may result in further displacement during the next rainy season.
The victims are urgently appealing for assistance in the form of food and tents to enable them to camp elsewhere, relieving them of the burden of paying rent.
