Duale highlighted that this initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting religious inclusivity and national unity.

“We express our sincere thanks to President William Ruto for the government’s steadfast support of Kenya’s Muslim community by facilitating the duty-free importation of dates for this year’s Holy Month of Ramadan, starting on March 31st,” he said.

“This generous gesture makes this essential fruit more accessible for Iftar and further emphasizes the government’s dedication to fostering both religious inclusivity and national unity.”

This move comes after the Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims requested a tax exemption on dates imported for Ramadan. In response, the Ministry of National Treasury and Economic Planning exempted the dates from the Import Declaration Fee (IDF) and the Railway Development Levy (RDL).

The National Chairman of the Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims has been asked to submit the necessary paperwork for customs clearance to ensure a smooth importation process.

It is customary for Muslims to break their fast with dates, following the tradition of Prophet Muhammad as mentioned in the Quran.
