Her mother, Lucy Ngugi, recounted that they were watching television together at around 6:20 p.m. when a sudden loud bang startled them. She turned to her daughter and noticed blood on her hand, initially thinking it was a minor injury.
“I went to hold her hand to see where she was hurt, but she collapsed before I could do anything,” Ngugi said, still shaken.
It was only then that Ngugi saw a severe head wound, bleeding profusely. She screamed for help, prompting her husband, Leonard Wainaina—who had been feeding chickens outside—to rush into the house.

The family lives approximately two kilometres from the main road, where protests were ongoing at the time, leaving them wondering how a stray bullet could travel such a distance and still strike with deadly force.
Njoki was rushed to a local medical facility but was pronounced dead during attempts to resuscitate her.

Detectives from the DCI’s Forensic Crime Scene Unit visited the home on Tuesday morning to investigate the incident.
“I want justice for my daughter, but even if it comes, it won’t bring her back,” a heartbroken Ngugi said.
Njoki’s father expressed frustration that the family, completely uninvolved in the Saba Saba protests, had become collateral damage in clashes between police and demonstrators.
“No leader or government official has come to see us or even sent a message of condolence,” he added.
