Four individuals have been arrested for allegedly killing a camel in Athi River, Machakos County.

According to Athi River Township assistant chief Martin Ngomo, the suspects were apprehended in Sofia village, near Athi River Township, hours after the incident.
Ngomo explained that the suspects, consisting of three men and one woman, were caught on camera while slaughtering the camel around 7 a.m. on Sunday, near a children’s center. The camel had been part of a group being offloaded from a trailer at an abattoir in Slota village when one of the camels escaped to Sofia village. A group of men chased the camel, cornered it near Bondeni slum, and killed it.
Ngomo said that neighbors, who witnessed the event, recorded the suspects in action. He was alerted to the scene, but by the time he arrived, the suspects had fled. The woman was seen on camera standing near the scene while the men butchered the camel, and the other three suspects were also filmed. The four were later detained at Athi River police station.
The camel meat was recovered and disposed of at the abattoir, but the assailants managed to take one of the camel’s limbs with them.
