A team of investigators visited the scene and collected eight spent cartridges, which have been sent for ballistic testing. Firearms issued to security officers who were at the venue have also been seized for examination as part of the probe.
According to police, Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko was addressing traders at Migori Malindi Market when Suna East MP Peter Masara arrived with a group of supporters. Tensions reportedly flared between rival factions, resulting in a confrontation.
Police stated that security personnel discharged their weapons while attempting to control the situation. Five individuals sustained serious gunshot injuries, while another person was treated for injuries believed to have occurred during the scuffle.
The injured were rushed to hospital as security officers escorted the two leaders away from the area. Investigators are recording statements from those present, including the MP, as the probe continues.
The shooting followed a separate clash a day earlier, on February 12, at a burial ceremony in Oruba, Suna, Migori County.

Witnesses and police said rival groups at the funeral hurled stones and other objects at each other, prompting security officers attached to public officials to fire shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
Tensions reportedly heightened during speeches, leading to chaos before police intervened and restored order, allowing the ceremony to proceed. Some mourners were injured during the fracas, and investigations remain ongoing.

Governor Ayacko later lodged a report at Migori Police Station, alleging that some of his supporters were assaulted and that several vehicles were vandalised.
Police indicated that no formal complaint had been filed by the MP regarding the burial incident.
Authorities added that tensions appeared to spill over into the following day, noting an increase in politically linked disturbances in parts of the country. They said measures are being taken to address the situation and avert further unrest.
