Residents of Eastleigh sprang into action Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out in a commercial building, leaving several people stranded on the upper floors.
The blaze erupted suddenly, sending heavy smoke into the air and trapping occupants inside the multi-storey structure. In response, locals improvised a rope system to help pull those stuck to safety as rescue efforts unfolded. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Footage from the scene showed thick black smoke and large flames as shoppers and tenants scrambled to escape the building.
The incident comes months after a similar fire occurred in January along Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District near the Munyu Road junction. That blaze caused panic among traders and passersby as smoke filled the area and businesses were affected.
Emergency teams, including firefighters, were dispatched to contain the flames and stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that its response team had been activated to assist in the operation.

Earlier in January, another fire along Luthuli Avenue destroyed property in a building housing electronics shops, forcing temporary business closures as police secured the area. Although firefighters managed to save some items, the cause of that fire was never established.
Authorities have not indicated whether the past incidents are connected. Investigations into the latest Eastleigh fire are expected once the situation is fully under control.
