CS Kinyanjui Leads Alumni to Rescue KU Med Student

Dancan Barongo, a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery student at Kenyatta University, is receiving a new lease on life after his heartbreaking story aired on Citizen TV, sparking a wave of public sympathy and support.

The 25-year-old orphan, who had been in his fifth year of medical school, was forced to drop out in 2024 due to lack of tuition fees and rent. With nowhere to go, Barongo ended up homeless on the streets of Githurai 45, unable to continue pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor.

His plight touched the hearts of many Kenyans, with well-wishers stepping in to offer temporary accommodation and support. Since the airing of his story, help has continued to pour in — led by Kenyatta University alumni, spearheaded by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Hon. Lee Kinyanjui.

In a strong show of solidarity, CS Kinyanjui announced a KSh 500,000 contribution to an alumni fund aimed not only at helping Barongo return to school but also supporting other students in similar situations. The fund, set up through the Kenyatta University Alumni Association, seeks to provide a sustainable safety net for financially struggling students pursuing higher education.

“Dancan’s story is not just his own — it reflects the silent struggles many bright and deserving young Kenyans face. We must come together to ensure that lack of finances does not rob the country of future professionals and leaders,” said Kinyanjui during an interview on Citizen TV’s Explainer show.

Efforts are now underway to facilitate Barongo’s re-admission to Kenyatta University and ensure he completes his studies.

The Kenyatta University Alumni Fund remains open to contributions from the public and other stakeholders wishing to help vulnerable students stay in school.
