Five Dead in Kwale Accident Involving Motorcycle and Lorry

On Sunday morning, at least five individuals lost their lives in a road accident in the Denyenye area of Kwale County.

The collision occurred around 1 a.m. on Likoni-Kombani Road and involved a lorry and a motorcycle.

According to police reports, the motorcycle was carrying six people, including the rider and five pillion passengers. The lorry had stalled on the road when the motorcycle, traveling at high speed, crashed into its rear. All five pillion passengers on the motorcycle died instantly.

The Coast Regional Police boss, George Sedah, highlighted that carrying multiple passengers on a motorcycle is illegal and dangerous, contributing to the tragic outcome. The lone survivor of the crash was taken to Diani Beach Hospital in critical condition.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Kwale Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

This incident adds to a troubling trend of fatal accidents, with a recent case involving six schoolchildren killed by a speeding car on Kitui-Kibwezi Road. The driver responsible for that crash has been arrested and faces serious charges.

Accidents continue to claim lives annually, with up to 4,000 fatalities reported each year. These incidents often have severe repercussions for families, and some remain unresolved.

The National Transport and Safety Authority attributes many fatal crashes to factors such as hit-and-runs, tire bursts, loss of vehicle control, improper overtaking, and lane violations. Efforts are underway to address these issues and improve road safety.
