Controversy at JCM USA: Pastor Wachira Quits Ahead of Ruto Event

Pastor Charles Wachira of Jesus Christ Compassion Ministry (JCM) USA has stepped down from his role, citing concerns over leadership decisions following confirmation that Bishop Ben Kiengei would host President William Ruto at the church.

In a statement released on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Wachira highlighted serious issues regarding leadership principles and public engagements that, he said, have unsettled many believers, particularly young congregants.

He explained that the decision was partly driven by the growing concerns among Gen Z members, who are increasingly calling for justice, accountability, and moral clarity amid a sensitive national climate.

“Pastor Charles Wachira resigns from JCM USA, citing serious concerns regarding leadership principles and public engagements that have deeply disturbed believers, especially Gen Z, who are advocating for justice, accountability, and moral clarity during this critical national season,” the statement read.

Wachira stressed that the church has a duty to respond to the pain and concerns of its members and should never appear indifferent during moments of national significance. He cited biblical teachings, noting the responsibility of spiritual leaders to uphold truth, defend righteousness, and speak for those unable to speak for themselves.

“The church must never appear indifferent to the pain of the people. ‘Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.’ – Isaiah 5:20. ‘Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.’ – Proverbs 3:8,” he wrote.

He argued that leadership actions causing confusion, division, or moral unease among believers require a principled response.

“Spiritual leadership must stand firmly on truth, righteousness, and the defense of innocent life. When leadership decisions create confusion, division, or moral discomfort among believers, it becomes necessary to take a principled stand,” he added.

Wachira emphasised that his resignation was guided by conviction and conscience, not rebellion, framing it as a commitment to integrity in spiritual leadership. He also indicated that further communication would follow, suggesting his departure may reflect a broader stance on ongoing developments within the church and the country.

“THIS STEP REFLECTS CONVICTION – NOT REBELLION. CONSCIENCE – NOT COMPROMISE. More communication to follow,” he wrote.

His resignation comes amid public debate following Kiengei’s announcement to host President Ruto at JCM for the church’s third-anniversary celebrations. The visit has drawn mixed reactions, with some, including digital content creator MC Chris Kirubi, urging church leadership to use the occasion to address Gen Z issues, including those who lost their lives in recent protests.

“Letter to Bishop Ben Guka wa Nairobi Muthee Kiengei: when his excellency comes to church tomorrow, do not forget to remind him about the Gen Z who died, who stood up, and the others who helped one another afterwards,” MC Chris wrote on Facebook on February 21, 2026.
