Chief Justice Koome Declares 11 Vacancies in Court of Appeal

Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced the availability of 11 positions for judges at the Court of Appeal.

According to a Gazette Notice dated January 30, 2024, the appointments will adhere to the provisions outlined in Article 166(1)(b), (2), and (4) of the Constitution, as well as Section 30, Part V, and the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, 2011.

To qualify as a Court of Appeal judge, candidates must possess a law degree from a recognized university or be registered as an Advocate of the High Court. Alternatively, candidates can hold an equivalent qualification in a Common-Law jurisdiction.

Additionally, applicants must have at least a decade of experience as a superior court judge, distinguished academic, or legal practitioner, or relevant experience in the legal field. They must also demonstrate high moral character, integrity, and impartiality, meeting the requirements outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.

Chief Justice Koome emphasized the importance of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good judgment, extensive legal and life experience, as well as commitment to public and community service.

A Court of Appeal Judge’s responsibilities include adjudicating appeals from the High Court and other courts or tribunals as stipulated by law.

Appellate judges have a retirement age of 70, with an early retirement option at 65. Salaries for these positions range from Sh775,845 to Sh1,187,152 per month, excluding benefits.
