Raila: Ruto-Koome Meeting Outcome Misrepresented

Raila Odinga asserts that the true purpose of the January 22 meeting between President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome was misrepresented to the public.

During a press conference, Raila stated that the meeting did not aim to resolve disputes between the Executive and the Judiciary as initially claimed.

He revealed that the Chief Justice and the President reached an agreement for increased funding for the Judiciary. As part of this agreement, the Judiciary would advertise vacancies for additional High Court Judges and Court of Appeal judges, in addition to those advertised last year.

Raila explained that under the agreement, the President would nominate judges for approval by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Chief Justice Martha Koome subsequently announced 11 vacancies in the Office of the Judge of the Court of Appeal, following the constitutional and legal provisions.

A statement from State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed on January 22 had previously indicated that the Ruto-Koome meeting aimed to enhance the Judiciary’s budgetary allocation. This allocation would fund the recruitment of 36 judges, improve transportation facilities, and support efforts to combat corruption across all branches of government.
