Cabinet Endorses Utilization of Technology to Manage Nairobi Traffic

In a session led by President William Ruto earlier today, the Cabinet sanctioned the adoption of the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to address the persistent issue of traffic congestion in the city.

The proposed technology aims to supplant the traditional reliance on traffic police and county traffic officers stationed at various intersections throughout Nairobi.

“The Cabinet has given the green light for the implementation of the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Establishment and Junction Improvement Project. This third phase of the project is anticipated to bring about a paradigm shift in traffic management within Kenya, eliminating human involvement in traffic control and simplifying the process of penalizing traffic violations,” stated the dispatch.

Additionally, the advanced system will furnish real-time traffic updates, vehicle information, and prompt emergency services in case of accidents.

This decision follows prior unsuccessful attempts by both the county and national governments to alleviate congestion in the city. The previous administration had pinned hopes on the construction of the Green Park Terminus to mitigate traffic, but the anticipated results are yet to materialize.

During the meeting, the Cabinet underscored Nairobi’s status as a prime destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE), buoyed by the recent introduction of visa-free entry.

Furthermore, the Cabinet endorsed the hosting of regional, continental, and global conferences, with several high-profile gatherings slated for this year. Notable events include the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), the African Minerals Geosciences Centre (AMGC) Policy Organ Meeting, Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (GIEC) functions in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union, and the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Conference, 2024.
