The deceased, identified as Moses Barasa, had been arrested earlier in the day on allegations of stealing six bags of maize. Police said that while his details were being recorded at the station, he attempted to escape. Officers and members of the public pursued him, eventually catching him after locals reportedly assaulted him before police intervened.

He was returned to the cells, where officers later found him dead, allegedly after hanging himself with his shirt on a window grill. His body was taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Officials confirmed that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified and will take part in the probe.

The case mirrors another incident in Migori on September 26, when 41-year-old Allan Kamau Kimani, arrested for malicious damage to property, was discovered dead in Komwamu Police Post after reportedly hanging himself with his shirt.

Similar deaths in police custody have recently been reported in Mombasa and Kitale, raising public concern. IPOA has since announced ongoing investigations into these incidents, reiterating that all deaths in custody must be thoroughly and transparently examined.
