Burial committee chair Anthony Ndura said five victims will be interred on Monday under the Catholic Church, while three will be buried on Tuesday under the Anglican Church of Kenya. The remaining six, from Nyeri and Nakuru, will be laid to rest between Wednesday and Friday. He explained that the families chose separate ceremonies to accommodate relatives in different regions.
First Lady Rachel Ruto, who attended the service, assured the families of her solidarity, encouraging them to draw strength from faith.
“We are here to comfort you and remind you that there is a God in heaven who wipes away all our tears,” she said.
She also acknowledged the emotional and financial strain the tragedy has caused, calling for unity.
The government has waived Sh4.2 million in funeral costs and pledged psychological support for the bereaved families. Officials said the move is meant to ease the heavy financial burden brought on by the tragedy.
The crash, among the deadliest in recent months, occurred on Sunday, September 28, 2025, when a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a trailer. The impact left the matatu mangled, while the trailer overturned after veering off the road.
Eyewitnesses reported debris and personal items strewn across the highway.
