At a media training event held at Aga Khan University on Wednesday in preparation for World Radio Day 2025, MCK CEO David Omwoyo stressed the importance of humanizing news stories in journalism.

The training forum aimed at equipping journalists with skills for effective climate change reporting.

“Let’s focus on humanizing our news stories because it matters. People won’t care about a story unless it shows how climate change is affecting lives,” he stated.

Supporting his view, MCK’s Director of Media Training and Development, Victor Bwire, highlighted that many journalists focus too much on data journalism, neglecting the human aspect.

“There’s an overemphasis on data journalism, to the point where people’s voices are missing. We must stay connected with the people,” he said.

Bwire pointed out that many journalists face challenges in reporting on climate change due to limited training.

He urged reporters to move away from conflict-driven stories and embrace solution-based journalism, particularly regarding climate change.

“Many editors view climate change as an international issue and therefore don’t prioritize it. We need to focus on local reporting, rather than relying on Western media outlets,” he explained.

Bwire also emphasized the importance of promoting development journalism that highlights the country’s social and economic progress, aiming to foster positive change in society.

The MCK offers specialized training for media professionals in various fields, including health, business, governance, elections, public affairs, and climate and environmental reporting.

These efforts reflect MCK’s dedication to creating a media landscape that prioritizes human-centered reporting, with the goal of informing, inspiring, and driving meaningful societal change.
