The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrest of Alex Kasina, Gift Muia, and Milton Pogon in Kibwezi on Wednesday.

The DCI pointed out that incidents of robbery, theft of goods in transit, and vehicle hijackings along the highway have been on the rise, posing a threat to motorists’ safety.

“The Service has made significant strides in investigating these crimes, leading to the arrest of three suspects: Alex Kasina, Gift Muia, and Milton Pogon,” the directorate stated.

On Christmas Day of last year, the DCI also recovered 129 bags of rice stolen by a gang of four criminals on December 21 while the cargo was en route from Mombasa. The highway robbers attacked the truck driver in the Machinery area of Kambu along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. The gang, riding motorcycles, overpowered and assaulted the driver, forcing him to surrender the truck before dumping him near Makindu.

Makindu detectives, acting on a tip-off, raided the home of one suspect, Alex Kasina, 42. Kasina and his wife fled upon spotting the police.

The arrests occurred just three days after police detained Ibrahim Hassan, a 36-year-old suspect, near Archer’s Police Post. Hassan had allegedly tried to carjack an unsuspecting driver at the Isiolo-Garbatulla junction. Pretending to be a stranded traveler, he convinced the driver to offer him a lift but then threatened him with a knife and refused to get out at his destination. Police caught up with Hassan after a chase that ended in a crash near the police post.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to fighting such crimes and warned the public about the increasing tactic of carjackers posing as stranded travelers to deceive drivers.

“The National Police Service remains dedicated to fulfilling its mission of protecting life and property,” said the DCI.
