Mohammed Ali Hints at 2027 Mombasa Governor Bid

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali alias Jicho Pevu has for the first time suggested he plans to run for Mombasa governor, following years of political actions that indicated his interest in the position.

Ali, who has been recovering from a knee injury he sustained in December, made a politically charged statement on Saturday. While presenting Sh17 million in bursaries at Khadija Primary School, he declared that it was time for politicians in Mombasa to learn how to implement development-focused politics.

“Nyali receives Sh136 million annually. That money is what builds schools, roads, police stations, funds bursaries, buys school buses, and supports the many developments you see in Nyali,” he said.

“Meanwhile, someone has been sitting on Sh13 billion with nothing to show for it. Their focus is simply telling us how their parents raised them.”

“We will take that Sh13 billion and distribute it throughout Mombasa to ensure every resident benefits,” Ali added.

Ali, who injured his knee while representing Kenya in football at the East African Community inter-parliamentary games in Mombasa, is expected to be out for at least nine months after undergoing two surgeries, with a third scheduled in six months.

His statement comes at a time of growing political tension in Mombasa, as politicians seek early advantages ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, speaking at Mjambere Primary School on Saturday, warned his political opponents that he would not be easily defeated, asserting that his long political experience made him a formidable contender.

He appeared at the event alongside his political rival, Mombasa Speaker Aharub Khatri.

Last Thursday, Nassir cautioned his opponents not to misinterpret his silence as weakness. While presenting contract letters to ECDE teachers at Concordia Primary School, he reflected on his political journey.

“I was fortunate to serve as MP for two terms, then as governor. I will be blessed to serve as governor again and will continue to grow beyond that role,” he said.

Nassir explained that his approach to politics involves avoiding public confrontations with rivals, unlike other politicians.

“When a leader remains silent, it means they are stronger than others because they can endure attacks from opponents. It shows resilience and self-control. It’s easy to hate, but true strength lies in persevering and maintaining composure,” he stated.

Speaker Khatri, also known as Aroro, expressed on Saturday that he would take bold actions to ensure Mombasa residents receive the services they deserve, even if it means confronting challenges head-on.

His increased food drives across the county have sparked speculation that he is preparing to run for governor in 2027, despite his repeated denials.
