CS Muturi Dismisses Critics, Defends Abduction Comments

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has challenged leaders calling for his impeachment over his views on abduction cases.

The controversy follows Muturi’s statement urging the government to allow Kenyans to express themselves freely. His remarks sparked mixed reactions from both Kenyans and leaders, with some calling for his resignation.

Speaking at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations offices on Tuesday, Muturi dismissed the claims, stating that he would not engage with those making accusations.

“I will just say, bring it on. At my age, I am not the kind of person to respond to some of the statements. Some of it is just routine remarks from relatively inexperienced politicians, and they are not worth my response,” Muturi said.

“If anyone thinks I don’t know what I’m doing, they are in for a rude awakening,” he added.

The CS was at the DCI to file a statement regarding the alleged abduction of his son.

On January 12, Muturi criticized the government over the issue of abductions, claiming that young Kenyans have been disappearing since the June 2023 protests driven by Gen Z, with some later found dead under suspicious circumstances.

He argued that it was wrong for the government to deny involvement in the abductions while failing to explain who was responsible.

“The primary duty of the state and government is to protect the lives and welfare of its citizens. It cannot claim ignorance of such serious violations of Kenyans’ rights to live free from unlawful detention and the infringement of their fundamental right to life,” he stated.

On Monday, Aldai MP Marianne Kitany called for Muturi’s resignation or impeachment, criticizing his recent comments on abductions. Speaking at Mogomben Primary School in Kobujoi ward, Kitany argued that the CS should have raised the issue in Cabinet rather than discussing it in the media.

She described Muturi’s actions as disrespectful to President William Ruto and the Cabinet, the highest decision-making body in the country.

“The highest body where decisions are made in Kenya is the Cabinet, and only the President, Deputy President, Attorney General, and all Cabinet Secretaries are part of it. No other Kenyan is in the Cabinet. That’s where national issues are discussed,” she said.

“Why didn’t you raise the issue about your son and Kenyan children when you were the Attorney General? If you, as a Cabinet member, can’t raise it before the President, what should an ordinary Kenyan do? This is disrespectful to our President and the Cabinet.”
