Agriculture Cabinet Secretary nominee Mutahi Kagwe has disclosed that his net worth is Sh842 million, primarily consisting of real estate and land accumulated over time.
Kagwe made this revelation during his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Tuesday. He also outlined plans to implement a comprehensive communication framework to transform the agricultural sector, should he be approved for the position.
He emphasized the importance of using both traditional and digital media to improve communication within the sector, ensuring that all key agricultural stakeholders, including farmers, experts, and policymakers, are actively involved in decision-making. “Any decisions we make must involve those who own the agricultural and livestock products,” Kagwe stated.
Kagwe expressed his intention to work closely with both mainstream and social media to disseminate information and engage with the public, citing his experience during the Covid-19 pandemic as Health CS. He also highlighted the role of social media in reaching younger audiences, acknowledging its challenges but stressing its value in communication.
Regarding the involvement of youth in agriculture, Kagwe recognized that the sector is perceived as dull by young people. “Agriculture must be made exciting for the youth; it’s too ordinary and boring in its current state,” he said. He proposed integrating technology and innovative methods to make agriculture more appealing.
Kagwe also emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in the future of agriculture, asking whether the country is preparing its future farmers to leverage AI and compete globally.
