Mudavadi: More Speed Cameras to Be Deployed During Festive Season

The government has approved the nationwide installation of speed cameras to monitor and deter speed limit violations during the festive season.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration announced on Thursday that a multi-agency team of officers will be deployed to enforce speed limits and reduce road accidents.

According to a statement, officers have been directed to remain alert on major highways and key roads to ensure adherence to traffic regulations.

The ministry also stated that Base Commanders and officers assigned to their respective stations are expected to take all necessary measures to maintain safety and prevent incidents within their jurisdictions.

“Every officer must be proactive in monitoring, reporting, and addressing any violations of road safety regulations. This is vital to achieving the National Road Safety Goal of reducing traffic fatalities by 50% by 2028,” the ministry added.

In a statement signed by acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, officers were instructed to increase efforts against illegal and unlicensed PSVs to prevent them from operating as passenger transport vehicles.

“These vehicles must not be allowed to carry passengers, as they do not meet the necessary safety standards outlined in the NTSA (Operation of PSV) Regulations of 2014,” Mudavadi explained.

During the festive season, private vehicles are frequently impounded for illegally transporting passengers at inflated fares, which is against the law.

Mudavadi emphasized that there would be strict enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness regulations, ensuring that all PSVs have valid road service licenses for either long-distance or commuter routes.

“This will guarantee that only safe vehicles are on the road,” he said.

The CS also announced that police presence and patrols along major highways would be intensified, both day and night, to monitor and enforce traffic laws.

The enhanced patrols are aimed at discouraging reckless driving, speed violations, and the operation of unlicensed or overloaded PSVs.

December typically sees a significant rise in road fatalities as many Kenyans travel to rural areas to celebrate with family during the festive season.

“I urge Kenyans, especially PSV drivers on long-distance trips, to exercise caution and drive safely this festive season,” Mudavadi concluded.
