Atwoli To President Ruto: Let’s Change The Constitution

Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has called on President William Ruto to assist in amending Kenya’s constitution, which he says is being exploited by some individuals to block beneficial government projects.

Speaking at a church service in Kakamega, Atwoli argued that the current constitution allows people to approach the courts and halt important projects, even if they are in the public interest.

He warned that, under the present legal framework, the president could finish his term without delivering significant projects for the people.

“We are willing to support you, but the challenge is substantial. The first step is to help us change the constitution. The president wants to initiate projects, but people are going to court to stop them, even though they are national initiatives,” Atwoli said.

The COTU leader emphasized the need for constitutional reforms to facilitate major government projects.

Atwoli pointed out that certain constitutional provisions are hindering President Ruto’s ability to execute key initiatives.

“We must review our constitution because some elements are preventing the president from implementing important projects. We need to support him, or many of these projects will remain stalled until after his term,” he added.

Recently, the Court of Appeal allowed the government to proceed with the implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA), which will replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), following multiple delays.
