Political activist Morara Kebaso has been arrested at his Kahawa Sukari offices under unclear circumstances.
During the arrest, authorities seized electronic devices, including phones and laptops.
His lawyer, Pareno Solonka, reported that Kebaso has been held incommunicado since his arrest, with officers claiming to be acting on “orders from above.”
Initially taken to the Regional Police Headquarters in Nairobi, there were reports he would be transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Kiambu, but his lawyer denied this, asserting that Kebaso remains at the Regional Police Headquarters.
“Morara is still at the Regional Police Headquarters in Nairobi. Ignore all rumors about his transfer!” Solonka stated in a video shared on the social platform X. He also mentioned that officers at the entrance had received strict instructions from higher authorities to deny access to any lawyers or media personnel wanting to see Kebaso.
The reasons for Kebaso’s arrest are not clear, but he had reported being followed by government agents in late August. He has been actively touring the country to expose stalled government projects and highlight perceived widespread corruption.
Kebaso has become a prominent critic of President William Ruto, alleging that many of his initiatives are either stalled or yet to be implemented. He stressed the importance of holding the government accountable and expressed that he is not concerned about his safety, as it would undermine his mission.
The father of two mentioned he has received threats and has been followed by vehicles with unidentified license plates. “If I worry too much, I won’t be able to continue my work,” he said. “What I am doing is extremely risky. I’ve had incidents where my phone was tracked and untraceable vehicles were spotted near my home.”
