Ford Foundation Denies Funding Kenya Protests

The Ford Foundation has denied allegations of funding anti-government protests in Kenya.

The U.S.-based philanthropic organization clarified its stance following concerns raised by the Kenyan government regarding its financial support to various non-state entities in the country.

These entities, including Africa Uncensored Limited, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Transparency International, received a total of USD 5.78 million from the Ford Foundation between April 2023 and May 2024.

In response to a letter from the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foundation emphasized its commitment to transparency in its grant-making processes globally. It reiterated its dedication to supporting civil society causes and promoting social justice and equitable development.

The Ford Foundation stated that all information about its grant allocations is openly accessible on its website, www.fordfoundation.org.

It also emphasized its respect for the rights of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for justice and equity while condemning any form of violence or hate speech directed at any entity or individual.

Furthermore, the Foundation expressed its ongoing commitment to contributing positively to the region’s development and creating opportunities for the people of Kenya.
