Kitengela: Six Rescued from Flooded Homes as Kenya Battles Deluge

Six individuals were rescued from inundated residences in Kitengela, Kajiado County, subsequent to a substantial rainfall on Wednesday morning. The Kenya Red Cross, in an update at 7 a.m., reported ongoing search efforts in areas including Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG.

The rescue mission commenced at 4 a.m., with footage from the humanitarian organization illustrating submerged homes and rescue teams navigating through flooded compounds, some employing boats to reach the severely affected neighborhoods. Despite the challenges, the Red Cross affirmed their commitment to continuing the search for others in need of assistance.

Kenya has been grappling with widespread flooding, attributed to persistent heavy rains expected to persist until June. The toll has been significant, with over 170 fatalities, more than 102 injuries, and substantial damage to property. Government statistics released on Monday indicate over 30,099 households displaced, affecting around 150,495 individuals.

Furthermore, David Gikungu, the Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, cautioned about exceptionally heavy rainfall forecasted for Thursday and Friday of the current week.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s The Explainer program, Dr. Gikungu highlighted the likelihood of intensified rainfall across the nation, particularly over the upcoming weekend.
