The government has vowed to provide assistance to the victims of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 11 students from Kenyatta University in Maungu area on March 18, 2024.
During a memorial service held at the university on Sunday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu affirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to collaborating with the school and supporting the injured victims in hospitals.
Machogu conveyed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased students and extended sympathies to the Kenyatta University community. He expressed gratitude to the doctors from Taita Taveta who promptly attended to the injured students, acknowledging their efforts to save lives.
First Lady Rachel Ruto, present at the service, delivered a message of condolence from President William Ruto and provided financial assistance to the victims’ families. She expressed gratitude to the university leadership, the Red Cross team, first responders, and medical teams from Taita Taveta for their assistance.
Reflecting on the tragedy, the First Lady lamented the loss of young lives and emphasized the importance of school trips as moments of joy and learning.
Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina urged support for the survivors, emphasizing their need for assistance during this challenging period. He encouraged those willing to help the university to utilize the designated channels.
Both the First Lady and Machogu urged motorists to prioritize road safety, referencing another recent accident at Kapsabet High School, which resulted in fatalities and injuries.
