Hunger Situation in Kenya Still Serious Despite Improvement

Kenya’s global hunger ranking saw an improvement to 90 in the 2023 Global Hunger Index (GHI), down from 94 the previous year, yet the report still characterizes the situation as serious due to unbalanced food access.

Severe food insecurity affects approximately 27.8 percent of the population, exacerbated by factors such as food inflation driven by high import costs and extreme climate events like locust invasions and droughts.

Christian Schnieeper, Kenya county director of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), underscores the need for collective action to address these challenges, emphasizing the interconnectedness of global efforts in combating hunger and malnutrition.

Despite improvements since 2000, concerns persist, particularly in regions like North Eastern Kenya where malnutrition rates remain high.
