Raila’s AU Ambition Won’t Diminish Kenyan Political Clout – Wanga

Gladys Wanga, Governor of Homa Bay, dispels concerns about Raila Odinga’s potential loss of political support should he assume the chairmanship of the African Union Commission, asserting that it won’t diminish his influence in Kenyan politics.

Wanga contends that Raila’s transition from active domestic politics to a continental role won’t weaken his political following in the country. Raila himself has emphasized that his AU appointment is a temporary break and won’t dampen his political aspirations or the strength of his party.

As the chairperson of Raila’s party in Homa Bay, Wanga expresses confidence that Raila will maintain his influence even if he takes up the AU position.

“There are those speculating that this move aims to sideline him from politics, but they underestimate Raila’s enduring influence,” Wanga remarked.

She assures that ODM members are committed to promoting their leader regardless of his shift to the AU, emphasizing that Raila’s stature transcends formal party roles.

Wanga underscores Raila’s significance not only for Kenya but for Africa as a whole, advocating for collective action with Raila at the helm to advance the continent’s interests.

Describing Raila as the ideal candidate to succeed Moussa Faki of Chad as AU Commission Chair, whose term is concluding soon, Wanga aligns herself with others endorsing Raila’s candidacy, including figures from Kenya Kwanza and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, AU Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.

Raila, officially declaring his interest in the AU Commission chairmanship, asserts his readiness for the role, citing his prior experience as AU High Representative for Infrastructure and extensive consultations on the matter.
