Form 4 Student Passes Away After Participating in School Marathon

A Form Four student from St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega County, reportedly passed away after taking part in a school marathon event.

The deceased, identified as Timothy Akila, aged 20, succumbed while undergoing treatment at Chekalini Hospital after collapsing during the race at Chekalini Secondary School.

According to his father, Fred Amugunya, he had a conversation with his son that morning before Akila left for school. Akila informed him about the school games, and Amugunya proceeded with his daily tasks, unaware that it would be the last time he spoke to his son alive.

Amugunya received a devastating call later, informing him of his son’s sudden demise. Distraught and puzzled, he expressed his confusion over the events leading to Akila’s death.

The family is now calling upon the government to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akila’s passing.

In response, local chief Julius Mpapale emphasized the importance of both parents and teachers being aware of students’ health statuses, particularly those engaging in sports activities, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
