As couples celebrate Valentine’s Day, a human rights advocate in Kisumu seized the opportunity to educate young people about the importance of practicing safe sex.
Sam Morara, sporting a red trouser paired with a top made of condoms and adorned with condom bangles, walked through the streets of Kisumu, emphasizing the necessity of using protection.
Onlookers were intrigued by his attire, with some capturing photos of him.
Morara explained to the Star newspaper that due to the increasing prevalence of HIV and AIDS, he chose to engage youths on Valentine’s Day to raise awareness and stress the significance of safe sexual practices.
Holding a placard reading ‘Safer is Sexy,’ he urged young people to prioritize protection and avoid risky behaviors that could lead to sexually transmitted infections.
The Star caught up with Morara outside Property House, where the county government, through the tourism department, hosted a half-day event named ‘Lakeside Valentine’s Celebrations’ to promote love and unity.
The festivities included tree planting at Impala Sanctuary, distribution of flowers at Prosperity Square, giveaways, and concluded with a ceremonial cake cutting.
The guest of honor, Kisumu’s First Lady Mama Dorothy Nyong’o, emphasized that love extends beyond romance and called for measures to address the increasing cases of femicide in the country.
She stressed that ensuring women’s safety is crucial for the well-being of society and urged parents to educate their children on gender relations.
County Tourism CEC Faridah Salim echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the collective responsibility of both men and women to protect young children and urging parents to play an active role in their lives.
She expressed hope that concerted efforts would put an end to the tragic loss of young girls to violence.
