The national government has issued a directive for owners of Airbnb and other short-term accommodations to register their properties with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA). This move aims to ensure that these properties meet stringent standards for guest safety and security.
In a joint statement released by Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo and colleagues Anne Wang’ombe, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, and John Ololtuaa on Tuesday, the PSs highlighted the urgency of this measure in response to a recent increase in femicide cases occurring in such properties.
“All operators of short-term accommodation rentals, including Airbnbs, must register with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) immediately,” the statement emphasized. “This registration process is crucial to guaranteeing the highest standards of safety and security for guests.”
Starting February 5, 2024, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) will collaborate with TRA to enforce compliance among Airbnb and lodging owners. Strict penalties will be imposed on those found violating the regulations.
“We will conduct rigorous inspections of all registered properties in coordination with booking platforms to restrict unregistered rentals,” the statement continued. “Severe penalties, including fines and revocation, will be instituted for non-compliance.”
Resident Associations are encouraged to assist law enforcement agencies in enforcing these regulations, including information sharing, joint inspections, and coordinated responses to safety standard violations.
Additionally, security guards at these properties are now required by law to temporarily retain identification documents and record details of all individuals entering the premises, along with their entry and exit times. The installation of CCTV surveillance systems is also mandated to ensure continuous monitoring.
“We urge all stakeholders in the short-term rental sector to adhere to these regulations, recognizing their legal and moral responsibility in ensuring a safe environment for all individuals,” the PSs concluded.
