The Moscow-appointed leader of Donetsk reported that a shelling attack in the Russian-held city resulted in at least 25 casualties, with 20 people injured.
Denis Pushilin attributed the strike to a Ukrainian attack targeting a busy market. Emergency services are actively engaged at the scene, and precise details on the number of casualties are still being gathered.
There has been no official response from Ukraine regarding the incident, and as of now, BBC News has not independently verified the circumstances surrounding the strike. Photographs from Reuters depict damaged shop fronts and bodies strewn in the street.
Russia’s foreign ministry condemned the incident, labeling it a “barbaric terrorist attack” against civilians. Pushilin described the strike as “horrendous,” emphasizing that it occurred during the market’s peak activity.
According to AFP, a local resident named Tatiana recounted hearing an incoming projectile and sought refuge under her market stall. She described witnessing smoke, people screaming, and a woman crying.
Donetsk, along with parts of eastern Ukraine, was initially seized by Russian-backed forces in 2014, and Moscow has maintained partial control over the region since then.
The city is situated approximately 20 km (12 miles) from the frontline, with surrounding areas, such as Mariinka and Avdiivka, witnessing intense fighting in recent times.
