Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has officially joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), becoming one of the highest-profile elected leaders to align with the opposition party as political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election gather momentum.
Kang’ata confirmed that he will seek a second term as Murang’a governor on a DCP ticket while remaining part of the opposition’s Linda Mwananchi movement.

“I will defend my gubernatorial seat through DCP in 2027 while continuing to work with Linda Mwananchi,” he said.
The governor also noted that he had predicted Gachagua’s growing political influence in July 2024, saying recent developments had validated that assessment.
His announcement was made during a visit to Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, where the former Deputy President formally welcomed him into the party.
Gachagua described Kang’ata’s move as a homecoming, saying he was pleased to receive the Murang’a governor into DCP.
The former Deputy President said the party has continued to gain support since its launch and is positioning itself as a major national political force ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election.
According to Gachagua, DCP already has representation in Parliament and county assemblies, including one Member of the National Assembly and three Members of County Assembly drawn from different parts of the country. He said the party’s goal is to secure majority control in both the National Assembly and the Senate, as well as strengthen its presence in county assemblies after the next election.

Kang’ata’s reception was attended by several senior DCP officials, including Secretary-General designate Senator John Methu, National Organising Secretary Senator Mithika Linturi, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Kirinyaga Senators Kamau Murango and James Murango Kinyua, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa.

The governor’s decision is expected to strengthen DCP’s foothold in the Mt Kenya region as Gachagua continues efforts to expand the party’s influence and challenge the ruling UDA party in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
