East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kanini Kega has announced that his security personnel have been withdrawn, days after the tense Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in which he claimed to have been attacked several times.
In a statement posted on his social media platforms on Monday, July 20, 2026, Kega raised concerns over the decision to withdraw his security detail.
The development follows claims by the former Kieni MP that he was targeted while campaigning and supporting the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate during the closely contested by-election.
Claims of attack during campaigns
Earlier, Kega alleged that armed individuals, whom he identified as police officers, pursued his convoy after he completed campaign activities in Ol Kalou ahead of the by-election.
In a video shared on his Facebook page on July 13, 2026, he claimed that three vehicles carrying armed officers intercepted his convoy as he travelled towards Nyahururu.
Kega alleged that the officers pointed firearms at him and that his team narrowly escaped the confrontation.
He further claimed that his vehicle was hit by gunfire during the incident. According to Kega, he recovered what he described as the butt of a firearm that broke during the confrontation, as well as a live bullet, and handed both items to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kasuku Police Station.
He maintained that he survived the incident and accused those involved of attempting to harm him.
Opposition leaders raise security concerns
Kega’s announcement comes amid similar complaints from several opposition leaders over the withdrawal of their security personnel.
Last month, Siaya Governor James Orengo said his security detail had been withdrawn and had not been reinstated. He later stated that he would rely on lawful self-defence measures for his protection, arguing that the law allows individuals to defend themselves when necessary.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also voiced similar concerns, saying opposition leaders would not be intimidated and would take measures to protect themselves from individuals who might seek to disrupt their political events.
