Police officers in Uasin Gishu County were left stranded with a decomposing body at a station and inside a vehicle after three mortuaries reportedly declined to receive it, citing lack of space.
The body had been recovered from Mugoya Dam in Soy Sub-county after a herder who was grazing sheep spotted it floating in the water on June 16.

Officers who responded to the scene confirmed the body was indeed floating, before county fire brigade teams were called in to retrieve it.
A preliminary assessment indicated that the deceased was an unidentified African male adult, approximately 35 years old. The body was already in an advanced state of decomposition. Crime scene investigators documented and photographed the scene before opening inquiries into the incident.
Due to challenges in securing a mortuary, the body was temporarily held at Kamukunji Police Station as arrangements were made for preservation. Officers at the station later complained of a strong odor, saying it was disrupting operations.
The body was later transferred to a local mortuary on Wednesday following intervention, as investigations continue to establish the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.
In a separate incident, police in Embu East Sub-county have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was found on the banks of River Thuci in Mukuria Village.
The discovery was reported on June 16, 2026, after members of the public spotted the body at the riverbank in Mukuria sub-location. Authorities are working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Elsewhere in Murang’a South Sub-county, police are also probing the death of a 51-year-old man whose body was found along the Kenol–Kimorori road at around 7:33pm on June 16, 2026.
The deceased, identified as Charles Njoroge Ndungu, was found lying on his back with no visible injuries. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of death before the body is moved to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
