Karua: I Want Opposition Flag Bearer Seat Not Running Mate

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has reaffirmed her intention to contest for the United Opposition’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election, stating that she is not interested in serving as a running mate.

Karua said she is focused on securing the coalition’s top seat but remains willing to support whoever is selected as the flag bearer if she does not win the nomination.

“I will not be a running mate. I will do my best to be the united opposition candidate, but if someone else is chosen, I will support them without being their deputy,” she said during an interview on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live.

She expressed confidence in her bid, noting that she is prepared to compete strongly against other aspirants within the opposition alliance who are also eyeing the ticket.

Karua further proposed the need for a formal agreement among opposition parties to guide the selection process, suggesting a signed framework that would bind all contenders to accept the outcome and support the eventual nominee.

“I think each of them should answer that. We need a written document with clear rules of engagement that everyone signs, committing to the process and outcome,” she said. “It is prepared, but awaiting a retreat. We also need a joint manifesto so everyone feels included.”

The PLP leader also revealed that her party has launched an independent mobilisation drive, dubbed the “Purple Train,” aimed at expanding its national membership and identifying potential candidates for future elections.

Karua noted that while PLP remains part of the united opposition, it is simultaneously strengthening its structures and preparing its own political base.

The United Opposition is still working out its presidential lineup, with key figures including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, and Karua herself all expressing interest in the 2027 presidential race.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Kwanza administration has criticized the coalition, accusing it of lacking cohesion and a clear policy agenda, claims the opposition has dismissed.
