Security agencies in Mwingi town, Kitui County, have launched investigations after multiple human bodies were discovered in what is suspected to be a mass grave, raising fears of a possible serial killer or organized criminal activity in the area.

Tension has gripped residents following the shocking discovery, with detectives cordoning off the scene as forensic experts began exhumation exercises. Authorities fear that more bodies could still be buried at the site.

The latest breakthrough came after a dismembered body was recovered at the same location on Monday, prompting a wider search operation.

This development follows a disturbing pattern in the area, as two other mutilated bodies—a man and a woman, the latter missing her head—were discovered in the same vicinity less than a month ago. The repeated findings have deepened concern among locals, who suspect the bodies may be dumped in Mwingi after killings elsewhere.

Residents say the incidents have created widespread fear and uncertainty, with some pointing out that the discoveries have repeatedly been made near Kasina Primary School.

“There are bodies of people who have been killed and dumped here in our town. It is like people are being murdered elsewhere and their bodies brought here,” said one resident, Morris Kenyatta.

Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu described the situation as alarming, calling for urgent and thorough investigations into the repeated incidents.

“In the last four weeks, this is the fourth body to be recovered here. These are very disturbing incidents,” she said, adding that several other suspected burial spots remain unexamined.

Police have appealed to members of the public with missing relatives to come forward to assist in identifying the victims.

Mwingi Central Police Commander Antony Maina confirmed that the bodies were found buried in separate shallow graves and were in different stages of decomposition.

“All the bodies were naked and buried separately. Anyone with a missing relative should report to the police station to assist in identification,” he said.

The four bodies have since been moved to Mwingi General Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations and identification processes are underway as investigations continue.
