No Early Mid-Term Break for Learners, CS Ogamba Confirms

Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has dismissed speculation about an early mid-term break, confirming that schools will observe the second-term break according to the official academic calendar.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ogamba said learners will proceed on their scheduled mid-term holiday from June 24 to June 28, 2026, and urged parents and guardians to make the most of the break by engaging with their children and addressing any issues affecting them.

The announcement comes amid growing concern over incidents of unrest in schools and a series of fire outbreaks, including the tragic blaze at Utumishi Girls High School that claimed the lives of 16 students and left several others injured.

Rather than altering the school calendar, the Education CS called on parents to take a more active role in supporting learners during the break and encouraged them to channel any concerns through the appropriate school and government structures.

“Parents and guardians should use the mid-term break to spend time with their children, offer guidance and support, and communicate any concerns through the proper channels for action,” said Ogamba.

The CS also directed schools across the country to urgently convene parent association meetings to assess learner welfare and discuss emerging issues affecting students.

In addition, schools have been instructed to strengthen safety measures, improve systems for handling student grievances, and enhance guidance and counselling programmes.

Ogamba emphasized that institutions should address any concerns raised by learners before the break and ensure students have access to effective support mechanisms.

Meanwhile, county and sub-county education officials have been tasked with carrying out targeted safety inspections, particularly in schools identified as being vulnerable to unrest or other risks.

Looking ahead, the CS revealed that the Ministry of Education plans to review the academic calendar beginning next year to create a more balanced school schedule and reduce the strain caused by the lengthy second term.

The ministry said it remains committed to improving safety, welfare, and the overall learning environment in schools across the country.
