The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says it is analysing video footage linked to the burning of a vehicle along Thika Road during Monday’s protests as investigations into violence and destruction of property continue.
The incident involved a black Mazda CX-5 that was set on fire in Githurai amid demonstrations connected to a nationwide transport strike over rising fuel prices. The vehicle was engulfed in flames in the middle of the road as protests intensified in parts of Nairobi and nearby areas.
In a statement, the DCI confirmed that detectives are reviewing viral videos believed to contain images of key suspects connected to the incident.
According to the agency, the footage may help identify individuals involved in the torching of the vehicle during the protests along Thika Road.
The burning car caused major disruption for commuters already affected by transport paralysis, blocked roads, and clashes between protesters and police officers.
Authorities have not yet established the exact circumstances surrounding the fire, including whether the vehicle was deliberately torched, abandoned, or accidentally caught in the unrest.
The DCI described the incident as a serious threat to public safety and property, adding that detectives are actively following leads to track down those responsible.
Protests linked to the nationwide strike by transport operators opposing recent fuel price increases disrupted movement across several towns and highways on Monday. Areas around Githurai and Thika Road witnessed heightened tension, with reports of barricades and heavy police presence as demonstrators protested the high cost of fuel.
Transport sector players have accused government policies and regulatory decisions of pushing fuel prices higher, saying the increases have made operations costly and raised the price of goods and services.
The DCI has appealed to members of the public to share any useful information, especially if they can identify individuals seen in the circulating footage. Kenyans can report anonymously through police stations or the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline.
The National Police Service also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and warned against criminals taking advantage of protests to commit unlawful acts.
By the time of publication, no casualties had been officially reported in relation to the burning vehicle, while investigations remain ongoing.
