Kuria: Ruto Can Win Without Mt Kenya Vote

Former Presidential Advisor Moses Kuria has expressed confidence that President William Ruto could win re-election in the next General Election even without relying on support from the Mount Kenya region.

Kuria argued that the results of three by-elections held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, reflect the growing nationwide support for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

UDA emerged victorious in all three contests, a performance Kuria described as proof of its expanding national appeal.

In a post on X, he downplayed the political importance of the Mount Kenya region, traditionally regarded as a key voting bloc due to its large electoral influence.

“Dear Mt Kenya. There were 3 by-elections today [May 14], UDA won all three. 100% performance. I will keep reminding you, even if you do not like it. William Ruto will be re-elected without a single Mt Kenya vote,” Kuria posted.

The remarks followed UDA wins in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Endo Ward in Elgeyo Marakwet County, and Porro Ward in Samburu County.

In Emurua Dikirr, UDA candidate David Keter secured 18,266 votes to defeat Democracy for Citizens Party contender Vincent Kibet Rotich, who received 10,760 votes.

In Endo Ward, UDA’s Festus Korir Kiprop won with 4,475 votes, while his closest rival Shadrack Kosgei Chelang’a of the National Development Party managed 752 votes. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission reported a voter turnout of 36.59 percent.

In Porro Ward, Daniel Lolngojine of UDA won with 2,328 votes, beating Kenya African National Union candidate Josphat Jumani Leleur, who garnered 1,036 votes. The ward recorded a turnout of 65.96 percent.

The outcomes have been interpreted by UDA supporters as evidence of increasing grassroots backing for the party ahead of future elections.

Kuria maintained that the results demonstrate UDA’s national strength and suggest that President Ruto’s political support is not confined to traditional regional strongholds.

However, analysts noted that the close margin in Emurua Dikirr also signals growing competitiveness from opposition-aligned parties such as the Democracy for Citizens Party.

UDA leaders have since welcomed the results, saying they reflect continued public confidence in the government.
