French President Emmanuel Macron has commended President William Ruto for his role in shaping discussions on African and global affairs as the Africa Forward Summit 2026 commenced in Nairobi.
Speaking shortly after arriving in Kenya for the summit, Macron said France appreciates Ruto’s dedication to advancing continental and international dialogue, noting that Kenya’s rising diplomatic influence contributed to Nairobi being chosen as the host city.

“Thank you very much for your words, Mr President, and for your warm welcome,” Macron said.
“I’m happy to return to Nairobi seven years after my first official visit to your country. We have always admired your commitment to African and global matters. That is why we chose Nairobi to host this Africa Forward Summit.”
Macron also highlighted the growing relationship between Kenya and France since his landmark visit seven years ago — the first official trip to Kenya by a French president.
“The last seven years have been remarkable. We have achieved a lot together, strengthened our bilateral relations and built closer ties,” he said.
The summit has attracted Heads of State, investors, diplomats and policymakers to deliberate on investment, climate change, technology and economic cooperation between Africa and France.
President Ruto noted that Kenya and France have enjoyed strong diplomatic relations since 1963, when France was among the first nations to recognise Kenya’s independence.
He added that collaboration between the two countries has expanded in recent years in sectors such as renewable energy, urban transport, education, innovation and digital transformation.
During the summit, Kenya and France signed 11 agreements aimed at boosting economic and strategic cooperation.
One of the key deals involves the rehabilitation and upgrade of Nairobi’s commuter rail network through an €83 million financing package expected to enhance transport links within Nairobi and surrounding areas.

The agreements also cover logistics and port infrastructure, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, the blue economy and the peaceful application of nuclear energy.
The Africa Forward Summit is expected to prioritise discussions on youth employment, artificial intelligence, green industrialisation and investment opportunities as leaders seek to strengthen partnerships between Africa and Europe.
