Car Bursts Into Flames on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A Volkswagen car burst into flames after being involved in a road accident in Athi River, Machakos County, on Sunday morning.

According to Athi River East Subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae, the crash involved the Volkswagen Golf and a Mercedes Actros trailer. The incident was recorded at Athi River Police Station as a non-injury traffic accident.

Mbae said the accident occurred at around 7:15 am near Athi River Bridge along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway close to Crystal Rivers Estate.

Both vehicles were heading toward Mombasa when the driver of the Volkswagen reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance and crashed into the rear of the trailer.

“The impact caused the car to catch fire,” Mbae stated.

Traffic police officers from Athi River responded to the scene, documented the incident, and managed the situation. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from the Machakos County Government later extinguished the blaze, allowing traffic flow to return to normal. The damaged vehicle was towed to Athi River Police Station.

The incident came just hours after another fatal accident along the Machakos-Wote Road on Saturday evening, where two people died after a collision involving a tuk-tuk and a lorry in the Katoloni area.

Police said the tuk-tuk driver and one passenger died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.

Joseph Kioko, chairman of the Machakos Tuk-Tuk Operators Association, confirmed the tuk-tuk had been travelling from Machakos town toward the Kimutwa area when the crash occurred.

Cases of vehicles catching fire on Kenyan roads have recently increased. In September 2025, an Audi A4 burst into flames in the Lukenya area along Mombasa Road after reportedly developing a mechanical problem in the engine compartment.

Although the vehicle was completely destroyed, the driver escaped unharmed.
