Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has been named the African Union’s High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said Kikwete will, in his new position, help drive the AU’s efforts to tackle the region’s complex political, peace, and security challenges.
His role will also focus on enhancing regional cooperation frameworks to promote lasting peace and stability.

Kikwete is expected to work closely with key regional and global partners, including IGAD, the East African Community (EAC), the League of Arab States, and the United Nations, among others, to ensure coordinated and effective peacebuilding efforts.
This collaboration is seen as vital given the strategic importance of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea in global trade and regional stability.
Youssouf expressed confidence that Kikwete’s experience and leadership will significantly contribute to advancing peace, stability, and development in the region.
