Azimio Kicks Out Joho, Junet, and Wandayi in Major Leadership Shake-Up

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has announced a significant leadership reshuffle, removing several senior politicians from key coalition positions.

In a statement on Monday following a joint meeting of the Coalition Council and the National Coalition Executive Council, the party said the affected leaders stepped down after taking up public offices or joining rival political formations.

Among those dropped from the Azimio Coalition Council are Mining CS Hassan Joho, Nominated MP Sabina Chege, Abdi Noor Omar Farah, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Other leaders removed from the Azimio National Coalition Executive Council include Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya, MPs Adan Keynan (Eldas), David Pkosing (Pokot South), Mishi Mboko (Likoni), Abdul Haji, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, Isabella Wangechi Githinji, Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, and Solomon Kuria.

The coalition indicated that replacements for these positions would be announced later as part of an expanded leadership structure.

The meeting also ended Junet Mohamed’s appointment as leader of the Azimio Coalition Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly. Caroli Omondi was appointed to take over the role immediately.

Kalonzo Musyoka, the coalition party leader, said the changes were necessary due to recent political developments, including government appointments and alignment with competing coalitions.

On February 3, 2026, Azimio la Umoja unveiled a broader reorganisation of its top leadership aimed at revitalising the coalition and sharpening its political strategy ahead of the next phase of national engagement.

Under the chairmanship of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, a joint session of the Azimio Council and National Executive Committee was held on February 2, 2026, during which key leadership appointments were unanimously approved.

In the reshuffle, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was confirmed as Party Leader of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, solidifying his central role in guiding the coalition’s political direction. Suba MP Caroli Omondi was named Secretary General, while former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia was appointed Executive Director.

Azimio said the appointments were driven by “evolving political circumstances” that required swift, strategic adjustments to strengthen internal coordination and effectiveness.

“These changes are part of a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalise the coalition,” the party said. “The goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness, and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation.”

The meeting, chaired by Kenyatta as chairman of the Azimio Council, brought together senior coalition leaders to review the party’s organisational structure, political landscape, and long-term strategy.
