Why Kenyans in Israel Are Safer Than You Think Amid Iran Tensions

Israel’s Ambassador to Kenya, Gideon Behar, has assured Kenyans and other foreign nationals living in Israel that their safety is a top priority amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. He emphasized that foreigners have the same access to emergency shelters and civil defense systems as Israeli citizens.

Speaking on Capital in the Morning on Thursday, Behar noted that all residents, including expatriates, are fully integrated into Israel’s national safety infrastructure designed to protect civilians during missile and drone attacks.

“Kenyans, like all foreign nationals, are being looked after. They receive full updates and have complete access to shelters. Their safety is identical to that of Israeli citizens,” Behar said.

Israel’s civil defense system alerts people of incoming threats and guides them to nearby shelters. Foreigners receive these alerts through the same mobile apps used by Israelis. “When alarms go off, everyone heads to shelters together. Foreign nationals are part of the community,” he added.

Behar made the remarks amid rising tensions in the region following recent missile and drone exchanges between Israel and Iran. He also mentioned efforts to repatriate Israelis stranded abroad due to airspace closures, estimating around 160,000 citizens awaiting return.

“The desire of Israelis to come home despite the risks shows the resilience of our people,” the ambassador said.

On broader implications, Behar acknowledged concerns over potential economic effects, such as oil price fluctuations, but noted that global markets remain stable.

He highlighted Israel’s strong relationship with Kenya, affirming continued cooperation in technology, knowledge transfer, and capacity building.

“We stand with Kenya in its challenges, supporting it through technology and expertise,” he said.

Finally, Behar cautioned that Iranian-backed networks have historically targeted Israeli interests overseas but expressed confidence that security conditions would improve and the situation would stabilize in the coming days.
