Siaya to Host Major National Para-Athletics Trials

The two-day event will act as the main selection platform for athletes seeking places in Kenya’s national para-athletics team, which is set to compete in major competitions such as the 2026 World Para Athletics Grand Prix series in Rabat, Morocco, and Tunis, Tunisia, as well as regional championships and other International Paralympic Committee (IPC)–approved events.

Participation is open to learning institutions, including primary and secondary special schools, colleges, and universities. Registered sports clubs, community-based para-sports organisations, county-sponsored athletes, and independent competitors are also expected to take part, according to KNPC.

A representative of the Local Organising Committee said the trials offer a vital chance for athletes to showcase their abilities at national level, noting that the search will include both experienced competitors and emerging talent from schools and higher learning institutions.

The competition will feature a wide range of track and field events. It will also include a national classification exercise, a key process that groups athletes based on how their impairment affects performance, in line with IPC international guidelines.

The Siaya County Government has pledged to support the event by providing logistics, security, and accessible facilities to ensure smooth participation for athletes and fans alike.

Teams and individual athletes interested in competing have been advised to register through their respective county sports offices or via the KNPC online portal.

KNPC is the national body responsible for the development and representation of para-sports in Kenya, with a mandate to promote inclusion, talent development, and high-performance pathways for athletes with disabilities at both local and international levels.
