Uchumi Supermarkets Reopens Two Nairobi Branches

Uchumi Supermarkets has resumed operations at two Nairobi outlets, signaling a renewed push into Kenya’s retail sector.

The retailer has relaunched its branches at Unicity Mall along Thika Road, near Kenyatta University, and at Lang’ata Hyper off Lang’ata Road.

The reopenings mark a gradual return following a period of restructuring. The Unicity Mall branch, which first reopened in late 2024, offers essential groceries and bakery services.

The Lang’ata Hyper outlet now functions as a mixed-use retail and commercial space, hosting several tenants alongside Uchumi’s own operations.

In a social media announcement, the supermarket described the reopening as a way to reconnect with customers.

“Uchumi is back — not just as a store, but as a story reborn. The shelves are filling, the ovens are warm, and the memories are alive again. From generations that grew up with us, to a new one discovering us — this is your home of value, rising once more,” the company said.

Founded in the 1970s and listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in 1992, Uchumi has long been a household name in Kenya’s retail industry, with past operations in Uganda and Tanzania.

The company is currently under a court-supervised Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), allowing it to restructure while continuing to trade. As part of this strategy, Uchumi has optimized its properties, including the Lang’ata outlet, by leasing space to other businesses to support ongoing operations.

The reopening of the Unicity branch and the reconfigured Lang’ata location form part of Uchumi’s wider plan to maintain a foothold in Kenya’s retail market.
