Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni is approaching the final one hour of her extraordinary 72-hour nonstop tree-hugging challenge, aiming to set a new world record.
The 22-year-old started the marathon on Monday, December 8, 2025, outside the Nyeri governor’s office, with supporters, county officials, and onlookers watching closely.

Her goal is to surpass her previous record of 48 continuous hours, set in February 2025, by reaching 72 hours of continuous tree-hugging.
From the beginning, Muthoni has emphasized that her challenge is more than a test of endurance. She describes it as a “silent protest” against deforestation, a call to protect indigenous forests, and a personal demonstration of the mental-health benefits of reconnecting with nature.
She explained, “Hugging trees is therapeutic, especially given the mental health challenges worldwide that are often linked to environmental degradation.”
