Raila Odinga’s Sister, Beryl Achieng, has Passed Away

Beryl Achieng, the sister of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, died on Monday at a Nairobi hospital where she had been receiving treatment, a family source confirmed to the press.

According to the source, she had battled a long illness and had been hospitalized several times, including at the same Indian medical facility where Raila was previously treated. She was the youngest member of the Odinga family.

Ruth Odinga confirmed the news, saying the family was heartbroken by the loss.

“With deep sorrow but accepting God’s will, we announce the passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga,” she said.

Ruth described her as a devoted mother and a strong presence within the family.

“Beryl was a loving mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taure,” she said, adding that she was also sister to Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, and others.

She further acknowledged the extended relatives mourning alongside them, noting that Beryl was sister-in-law to Dr Anne Oburu, Dr Canon Ida Odinga, Hon Tabu Osewe, and Judy Oburu.

Ruth said the family is relying on their faith as they grieve.

“Though her passing leaves an enormous void, we trust she is resting safely in God’s care,” she said. “We are grateful for the time we had with her and the lasting impact she made on everyone who knew her.”

Beryl maintained a low public profile compared to some of her siblings and avoided active politics. She made history as Mutare’s first Black Town Clerk in Zimbabwe and, in 2020, was appointed Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.

Overall, Beryl Achieng Odinga is remembered as a dedicated professional who held significant roles in public service, carving out her own path despite her family’s political prominence.
