ODM Party has announced the death of Mama Rose Kajwang, the widow of the late Homa Bay Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang.
In a statement shared on Thursday night via its official X page, the party expressed deep sorrow over her passing, confirming that she died earlier in the day after a period of illness.
“We mourn the passing of Mama Rose Kajwang’, widow of the late Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang’, earlier today after an illness. As the Orange family, we commiserate with the entire Kajwang’ family and the people of Suba North for the loss,” ODM stated, adding, “May her soul rest in peace.”
Mama Rose was a distinguished academic and lecturer at Kenyatta University, where she also led the university’s alumni association. She was widely respected for her commitment to mentorship and her advocacy for women in education and leadership.
Her death marks a significant loss for one of Nyanza’s most influential political families and for the ODM fraternity.
Her husband, Gerald Otieno Kajwang’, was an outspoken ODM leader and a close ally of party leader Raila Odinga. Rising to national prominence in the 1990s, Kajwang’ represented Mbita Constituency after being elected under the ODM ticket in 2007.
Known for his fiery speeches and popular slogan “Bado Mapambano,” he became one of ODM’s most recognizable figures.
In 2013, he was elected as the first Senator for Homa Bay County, serving until his death in November 2014 at the age of 58. His passing drew widespread tributes for his dedication, humor, and service to the nation.

After his death, his younger brother Moses Otieno Kajwang’ won the 2015 by-election to succeed him and has since retained the seat in 2017 and 2022, carrying on the family’s political legacy.
Mama Rose remained a strong pillar of the Kajwang’ family, supporting her husband’s political path while promoting education and leadership values within her community.
The family is expected to release details of the funeral arrangements in due course.
