President Mahama explained that the United States had approached Ghana to accept the removal of three citizens from the United States, and Ghana had agreed to accept the West African citizens, citing the ECOWAS Protocol on Freedom of Movement. The protocol allows citizens of member states to enter and reside in other West African countries without a visa for up to 90 days.

“We have no problem accepting them,” President Mahama said, adding that Ghana facilitated the return of the deported Nigerian president to his country by bus, while the Gambian citizen was assisted by Ghanaian authorities and the Gambian embassy in Ghana.

This is part of the efforts of US President Donald Trump’s administration to deport millions of immigrants who are in the United States illegally, while some African countries are already accepting deported immigrants. Rwanda, South Sudan, and Eswatini have agreed to take in citizens deported from the US.
